Sea Legs

We’re knee-deep in “winter” here, striding along in its rhythm. Over the years, we’ve somehow grown accustom to it. Warm, humid days followed by rainy afternoons and then, inevitably, a few extra days of pulling the boots back out from underneath the bed and finding happiness in one-size-fits-all leggings.  Which is kind of the comfort equivalent of wearing your jammies all day. I’d never deny a jammie-type day.
But spring, well spring is rearing its horns, I can just feel it. The humidity is a little bit deeper, and the spurts of cold are growing farther and farther apart. And although we’re nearly a month away from the official start of “white pants and boat shoes,” it’s a pretty good bet that rules will be broken and limits will be pushed ’round here. After all, we do live in Florida.

For our family, the brink of spring means outings and adventures and chasing sunsets and just about any excuse to get a little closer to the glimmer of the shoreline.  So last week, we swapped our boots out for flip flops and our umbrellas for sunscreen. We ventured out and tested the waters–the very cold waters–along with a new set of twinkling little toes in the sand.

Isla lost this fight.  Mushiest.  Kiss.  Ever.

And then we made our way to the warmer waters. Here, baby feet remain shoeless, and toes are easily accessible for on-call nibbling (yet perfectly safe from lobster chomping.) The Florida Aquarium was a menagerie of firsts for all of us, and it warmed my soul knowing that in this sea of moments, I was hoarding away a stockpile of digital memories. Memories that I know in time would slip by if they weren’t captured.
