styling your session

stick to a neutral color palette

I highly recommend wearing muted, organic, natural colors –  grays, khakis, ivories, whites, soft peach or rose.  This really allows for the beauty of the family to shine through and eliminate all the distractions.

don’t match.  rather, coordinate

Try and avoid everyone matching in the same tops and/or outfits.  Instead, use that fantastic color palette of neutrals and find great outfits, individually, for everyone.  When you all are combined, the simple color choices naturally create a beautiful flow to the images.

textures

The best tops have a nice flow to them, move with you and don’t pull.  Long maxi dresses and skirts are beautiful because they show so much movement in the images.  For men, a waffle-knit shirt,  henley or cotton-crewneck sweater is a great choice!  Corduroys, linen or a worn soft pant also look great.   I highly recommend avoiding polo shirts, crisp button-downs or dressy slacks.  Flowy, organic cottons and dresses for children or tunics over leggings are always my favorite choices.  For newborns and babies, cloth diapered bottoms are a beautiful choice as well as soft rompers.

dimension

Adding layers of the same or similar colors can add a lot of depth and dimension to your photos. A whimsy kimono, a cardigan or scarf, boots over leggings, etc.  Jewelry should compliment, not distract from your images.  Remember, sometimes things that look best in photographs aren’t necessarily an outfit you would wear out, but rather a styled look.

lay it out

A great way to see everything together and see how it looks is to lay it all out on the bed. Does it need anything else? Are there pieces that could be swapped out for something more cohesive? This is the perfect time to tweak and perfect so you can be confident your clan will be looking their best!  Feel free to email me a phone pic for feedback – I always love that!
